「罰金を科したいなら、科せばいい」──9年で4部からCLへ、コモ会長の本音

Nine years ago, Como was a bankrupt club in the fourth division of Italian football.

9年前、コモはイタリアサッカー4部の、倒産したクラブだった。

Its new owners bought it for 850,000 euros, plus 150,000 euros of debt.

新しいオーナーたちは、85万ユーロと15万ユーロの負債でクラブを買った。

Last season, Como finished fourth in Serie A and will play in the Champions League for the first time.

昨季、コモはセリエAを4位で終え、初めてチャンピオンズリーグを戦う。

So how did they do it?

どうやってそこまで来たのか。

According to president Mirwan Suwarso, Como simply stopped thinking like a football club.

会長ミルワン・スワルソによれば、コモはサッカークラブのように考えるのをやめただけだ。

Como is a city of only 85,000 people, with a small stadium and limited TV money.

コモは人口わずか8万5000人の街で、スタジアムは小さく、放映権収入も限られている。

Competing on the same terms as Milan or Juventus was never going to work.

ミランやユヴェントスと同じ土俵で戦っても、うまくいくはずがなかった。

So the club built its business around the lake instead: hospitality, fashion, travel, technology and retail.

だからクラブは、代わりに湖を軸にビジネスを組み立てた。ホスピタリティ、ファッション、旅行、テクノロジー、小売。

On the Business of Sport podcast, Suwarso put it in one sentence: "Maybe we should be a sports tourism destination."

ポッドキャスト『Business of Sport』で、スワルソはそれを一文にまとめた。「僕らはスポーツツーリズムの目的地であるべきなのかもしれない」。

His ambition, he added, is to be the Los Angeles Lakers of Italian football.

All of this costs money, and UEFA's financial rules are watching closely.

これらすべてには金がかかる。そしてUEFAの財政規則は、じっと見ている。

But Suwarso says Como's situation has no precedent, and he refuses to spend less to please anybody.

だがスワルソは言う。コモの状況には前例がない、と。そして誰かを喜ばせるために支出を削ることを拒む。

He wants to be a good member of the association, and he does not want to be treated differently.

彼は協会の良き一員でありたいと思っている。だが、特別扱いされたいとも思っていない。

Then came the line that made headlines across Italy: "if you have to fine us, then fine us".

そして、イタリア中の見出しを飾ったあの一言が出た。「罰金を科さなければならないなら、科せばいい」。

A fine, for him, is just an obstacle to overcome — a normal cost of doing the work.

彼にとって罰金は、乗り越えるべき障害の一つにすぎない。仕事に伴う、当然のコストだ。

Como is dreaming big, and it is not apologising to anyone.
