マリが先に動いていた ― カンテが着なかった、もう一枚のユニフォーム

Long before France ever thought about calling him, Mali had already decided that N’Golo Kanté belonged to them.

フランスが彼を呼ぶことなど考えもしなかったずっと前から、マリはすでにエンゴロ・カンテを自分たちの選手だと決めていた。

He was born in Paris to Malian parents, and because he had never played for a single France youth team, both federations were legally free to select him for as long as he stayed uncapped.

彼はマリ人の両親のもとパリに生まれ、フランスの年代別代表で一度もプレーしていなかったため、代表未出場である限り、どちらの協会も彼を法的に選ぶことができた。

Mali moved first, approaching him before the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, at a time when he was a Caen midfielder in his first season in Ligue 1 and almost unknown outside France.

先に動いたのはマリだった。2015年のアフリカネイションズカップを前に打診したのだ。当時の彼はカーンのMFで、リーグ・アン1年目、フランス国外ではほぼ無名だった。

He turned them down politely, explaining that he did not yet feel ready for international football, but he also suggested that playing for Mali was something he might do later.

彼は丁重に断った。まだ代表でプレーする準備ができていないと説明しながら、マリでプレーすることは将来あり得ることだとも示唆した。

According to Jamie Vardy, who spent that famous title season beside him at Leicester, this was never a matter of calculation.

あの伝説的な優勝シーズンをレスターで隣で過ごしたジェイミー・ヴァーディによれば、それは打算の話では決してなかった。

“The mad thing originally, he didn’t even want to play for France,” Vardy said on his podcast. “He wanted to represent Mali for his dad.”

「イカれた話なんだけど、そもそも彼はフランスでプレーしたいとすら思っていなかった」とヴァーディはポッドキャストで語った。「父親のためにマリを代表したかったんだ」。

Anyone who knew Kanté found that easy to believe, because this was the same man who, on moving to Chelsea, sent his old Mini Cooper home to his parents rather than trading it in.

カンテを知る者なら、それを容易に信じられた。彼はチェルシー移籍にあたって、古いミニ・クーパーを下取りに出さず、実家の両親のもとへ送った男なのだから。

Within a year, however, the situation had changed completely, since the quiet midfielder from Caen had become the most talked-about player in England.

だが1年のうちに状況は一変した。カーンから来た寡黙なMFが、イングランドで最も話題の選手になっていたからだ。

Mali understood exactly what was slipping away, and in January 2016 their coach Alain Giresse went public with a second approach.

何が手から滑り落ちようとしているのか、マリは正確に理解していた。そして2016年1月、アラン・ジレス監督が公の場で2度目の打診に踏み切る。

Giresse admitted that a player of that quality was impossible to overlook, and said that his big hope was that Kanté would choose the national team of Mali.

ジレスは、あれほどの質を持つ選手を見過ごすことは不可能だと認め、大きな願いはカンテがマリ代表を選ぶことだと語った。

The Eagles, though, were competing with a French federation that had suddenly woken up to the same player.

だが「鷲たち」が競っていた相手は、同じ選手に突然目を覚ましたフランス協会だった。

Vardy’s account of what settled it is brutally simple: “France had called him before Mali did.”

決め手についてのヴァーディの説明は、残酷なほど単純だ。「マリより先に、フランスが彼を呼んだ」。

The Leicester dressing room did the rest, telling their team-mate at the training ground that a squad of that quality was going to win a World Cup and that he had to be in it.

残りはレスターのロッカールームが済ませた。あれだけの質のチームはワールドカップを獲る、だからお前はそこにいなければならないと、練習場で仲間に告げたのだ。

Kanté accepted, made his France debut on 25 March 2016 in a 3-2 win over the Netherlands, and reached a European Championship final that same summer.

カンテは受諾し、2016年3月25日のオランダ戦3-2の勝利でフランス代表デビューを果たし、その夏には欧州選手権の決勝に立った。

Two years later he was a world champion, and he would go on to collect sixty-nine caps and a Nations League title before turning thirty-five.

2年後には世界王者となり、35歳を迎えるまでに69キャップとネーションズリーグのタイトルを積み上げていった。

Mali, on the other side of that decision, have still never played at a World Cup.

その決断のもう一方の側にいたマリは、いまだにワールドカップの舞台に立ったことがない。

They came close again for 2026, finishing behind Ghana in their qualifying group despite eight goals from Kamory Doumbia, and they were not among the four African sides who reached the play-offs.

2026年大会でも惜しいところまで来ていた。カモリー・ドゥンビアが8得点を挙げながら、予選グループではガーナの後塵を拝し、プレーオフに進んだアフリカの4チームにも入れなかった。

It is impossible to know whether one midfielder would have changed that, but it is not hard to imagine what he would have meant to them.

MF一人でそれが変わったかどうかは、誰にも分からない。だが、彼が彼らにとってどんな存在になり得たかを想像するのは難しくない。

That is why Vardy’s story is worth more than a laugh: a phone call that arrived slightly too late is still shaping how two national teams are remembered.

だからこそヴァーディの話は、笑い話以上の価値を持つ。わずかに遅れて届いた1本の電話が、今なお2つの代表チームの記憶され方を形づくっているのだ。
