Rogers also reflects on his journey to Stamford Bridge, and highlights one period as particularly important.

It began with a string of loan moves away from Manchester City: Lincoln City, then Bournemouth, then Blackpool, before a permanent switch to Middlesbrough and a return to the Premier League with Aston Villa.

'That was everything,' he explains, when asked how those loan spells influenced his development.

'I needed that next challenge, that next step.'

「次の挑戦、次のステップが必要だった」

'I needed to get out my comfort zone and kind of find the player I was going to be in professional football.'

「自分の居心地の良い場所から飛び出して、プロサッカー選手として自分がどんな選手になるのか、見つける必要があったんだ」

'I'm a completely different player and I had to learn that on loan, because academy football can be good to a certain extent and can teach you tricks of the trade and all the technical sides of it, because football's football.'

「僕は完全に別の選手になった。それをレンタル移籍先で学ぶ必要があった。アカデミーのサッカーはある程度までは良いもので、コツやテクニックの部分を教えてくれる。サッカーはサッカーだからね」

'But the actual way the game is played, the desire from the other team to win, what it takes, what teams are willing to do, how they're willing to play to win games, you can't replicate that in academy football.'

「でも実際の試合の運び方、相手が勝ちたいと思う執念、何が必要か、チームが勝つために何をいとわないか、どうプレーしようとするか——それはアカデミーのサッカーでは再現できない」

'It's only in men's football.'

「それはプロの世界でしか経験できないんだ」

'So I think that really helped me be me.'

「だから、それが本当の意味で今の自分を作ってくれたと思う」

'I think everyone's path is different.'

「誰もが辿る道は違うと思うんだ」

'I wasn't ready.'

「僕はまだ準備ができていなかった」

'I needed time to develop, to learn, to understand myself more and to be here now at the level I know I can get to.'
