「本物のスポーツじゃない」——ベンゲルが語ったシティ処分の是非

On February 14, 2020, UEFA banned Manchester City from European football for two seasons.

2020年2月14日、UEFAはマンチェスター・シティに、欧州の大会への2シーズン出場禁止を科した。

It said the club had broken Financial Fair Play rules.

クラブがファイナンシャル・フェアプレーの規則に違反したというのだ。

UEFA also fined City 30 million euros.

UEFAはさらに、シティに3000万ユーロの罰金も科した。

Arsène Wenger, who managed Arsenal from 1996 to 2018, gave his view.

1996年から2018年までアーセナルを率いたアーセン・ベンゲルが、この件について見解を語った。

"I was always for control of the financial rules," said Wenger.

「私は昔から、財政ルールによる管理には賛成だった」とベンゲルは言った。

He also said: "I'm convinced that there is an evolution to be made in the way the rules are at the moment."

さらにこうも語った。「今のルールのあり方は、進化させるべきだと確信している」

But he was clear about clubs that break the rules.

だが、ルールを破るクラブについては、はっきりしていた。

"People who don't respect them and are caught trying to get around the rules in more or less legal ways have to be punished."

「ルールを守らず、多少なりとも合法的な手で抜け道を探して見つかった者は、罰せられなければならない」

Then he explained what he thinks is most important.

続けて、彼が何より大切だと考えることを語った。

Wenger said: "Sport is about winning by respecting the rules.

If there's no respect for the rules, it's not real sport, which is what I think is most important."

At the Laureus World Sports Awards in Berlin, Wenger also spoke about City.

"They bought all my players," he joked.

Many of his players did leave for the Etihad Stadium.

Kolo Touré and Emmanuel Adebayor went in 2009, Gaël Clichy and Samir Nasri in 2011, and Bacary Sagna in 2014.

Wenger was against taking titles away from City.

ベンゲルは、シティからタイトルを剥奪することには反対だった。

He said he did not know the rules well enough to judge that kind of punishment.

そうした処分がどんなものになるか判断できるほど、ルールには詳しくないとも語った。

In July 2020, the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the ban.

2020年7月、スポーツ仲裁裁判所（CAS）はこの出場禁止処分を覆した。

City still had to pay a fine of 10 million euros.

それでもシティには、1000万ユーロの罰金が科された。

The court changed the verdict.

裁判所は判断を変えた。

But Wenger's point is simple.

それでも、ベンゲルの主張はシンプルだ。

Winning matters, but how you win matters too.

勝つことは大事だ。でも、どう勝つかも同じくらい大事なのだ。
