Last December, Cole Palmer came on for half an hour at Leeds and found that he could not even sprint.

On Saturday, he sat down in front of Chelsea's cameras to explain why he had just committed his future to the club until 2034.

For most of last season, Palmer struggled with a groin problem that would not go away.

He played through the pain, something he later said he "probably shouldn't have done".

On Chelsea's pre-season tour in Sydney, Palmer admitted it was "obviously disappointing", but said seven weeks off had left him feeling fresh.

When he returned, he found a club in transition.

The two came through Manchester City's academy together, and Palmer was one of the few people who knew about the deal before it was announced.

"We always speak, and when I heard Chelsea were trying to sign him, I was texting him even more, persuading him to come," he said in July.

Yet the tension with England has not gone away.

This month, Palmer withdrew from the squad for the Nations League matches to focus on his recovery, and Tuchel publicly questioned how often he has been missing.

His club manager took a different tone.

Those words echo what he said back in April, when there was talk of a return to Manchester.

"When I see it I just laugh," he said at the time.

Back then, he insisted he had no plans to leave; now, he has put it in writing.

The numbers this season suggest the hardest part may be behind him: four goals and two assists in seven games.
